Female Hair Standards
Styled to present a professional appearance May not extend below bottom edge of collar Will not contain hair ornaments such as ribbons, beads, or scrunchies Conservative hair pins, elastic bands, etc. may be worn, but must match hair color; Long hair must be secured with no loose ends Will not exceed 3" in bulk or prevent proper wear of headgear Style must be conservative and not faddish.
Male Hair Standards
A tapered appearance on both sides and back (when viewed from any angle, outlines the individual's hair so that it conforms to the shape of the head) Will not protrude below front band of headgear, touch the ears, or exceed 1 1/4" in bulk Only closely cut hair on the back of the neck may touch the collar Shaved heads, "high and tights", and flat-top military hairstyles are permitted.
Males: Mustaches
Must be neatly trimmed; may not extend past corners of mouth, or extend downward past lip line of upper lip.
Males: Sideburns
Neatly trimmed and tapered; straight and of even width; will not extend below lowest part of exterior ear opening.
Males: Beards
Facial hair must be kept trimmed so it doesnt exceed 1/4 inch in length.
Nail Polish
Must be a single color complimentary to skin tone, or French manicure Will not contain any ornamentation or be extreme in color
Fingernails
Must be clean and well-groomed; may not exceed 1/4" past tip of finger.
Tattoos and Branding
Excessive tattoos may not be visible when in uniform; inappropriate tattoos prohibited anywhere on the body
Cosmetics
Must be conservative and in good taste; nail polish ; lipstick must compliment skin tone.
Eyeglasses
Conservative frames and lenses; worn only as designed; no sunglasses permitted in formation. Will not be worn around the neck or on top /back of head
Jewelry
Plain and conservative Watch - solid black, brown or silver or gold Rings - maximum 3 on both hands; thumb rings prohibited Bracelet - 1 only; conservative, gold or silver; max 1/2" wide Earrings - women may wear small (no more than 6 mm in diameter) spherical diamond, pearl, silver, or gold studs and can only wear 1 pair Body piercings - Prohibited anywhere visible on the body while in uniform, with the exception of females' earrings (no nose, tongues, eyebrows, lips or an exposed body part)
Undergarments
Undershorts and white v-neck undershirt mandatory with all uniforms (males); bra and panties mandatory with all uniforms (females); should not be visible above the collar or otherwise Undershirts will be tucked into trousers
Females: Service Dress
-Tie Tab Mandatory -Rank Insignia - center regular size metal grade insignia centered 5/8 inch from the end of the epaulet -Will wear shoulder mark insignia -Metallic name tag worn on the right side centered between sleeve seam and lapel, parallel with bottom ribbons. -Ribbons centered and resting on edge of pocket. -With arms hanging naturally, sleeves should end 1/4" from heel of thumbs.
Females: Service Dress Blues
-Long Sleeve shirt: Tie Tab mandatory -Short Sleeve shirt: Tie Tab is optional - Center blue name tag on wearer's right within 1 1/2 inch above or below the first exposed button - Center ribbons on wearer's left, parallel with ground. Align bottom of the ribbons with the bottom of the name tag
Female: Mess Dress
-Blouse: conventional white soft dress-type shirt with turn down collar and french cuffs -Blue satin inverted- V tie tab -Cuff Links are optional with the mess dress uniform (silver, satin finish or highly polished with the wing star design) -Cummerbund will be plain blue satin and worn halfway between the shirt and skirt with open edge of pleat facing upward -Footwear: black pumps, either patent or high gloss finish; no higher than 2 1/2 inch nor lower than 1 inch. -Handbag: carry a clutch style handbag (fabric or patent leather), of plain commercial design. -Hose: sheer, nylon in neutral, dark brown, black, or dark blue that compliments skin tone and the uniform; cannot be patterned
Female: PT Gear
Socks: will be white or black Jacket: will be zipped at least halfway between the waistband and collar Running Pants/Shorts: waistband will rest at or within 2 inches of the natural waistline Short/Long Sleeved Shirt: tucked in at all times Spandex: Both short and full length solid black or dark blue spandex may be worn and visible Proper reflective items are required during periods of low light conditions Athletic shoes of any color are ok Headphones and earphones: are authorized while in the fitness center or on designated running areas
Female: ABU
Top button of the ABU coat will not be fastened; however, all other buttons will be secured at all times. Pockets will be secured and items stowed in pockets will not be visible except pens stowed in the pen pocket. Commanders may authorize sleeves to be rolled up on the ABU coat; however, the cuffs will remain visible and the sleeve will rest at, or within 1 inch of, the forearm when the arm is bent at a 90-degree angle. When ABU coat is removed, t-shirt will be worn. Do not starch or hot press the ABU. A desert sand t-shirt will be worn under the ABU coat and tucked into the trousers. Tucking the ABU trousers into the boots is optional. When tucked in or bloused, the trouser must be evenly bloused (gathered in and draped over loosely) over the combat boot and must present a bloused appearance. A tan one piece nylon web belt will be worn with ABU trousers. Boots will be suede sage green. Excess boot lace will wrap around the top of the boot and tucked in.
Trousers/Slacks/Skirts
-Bottom front edge rests on front of shoe with slight break in crease -Back edge extends 7/8 in" longer than the front edge Skirt: -hem of the skirt may be no shorter than top of kneecap nor longer then bottom of kneecap
Flight Caps
-Insignia worn 1/2" from front and centered top to bottom on left side -Worn angled Slightly to wearer's right -Extends 1" from eyebrows -When not worn, stored on left side (males) or on either side (females), between first and second belt loops
Other Items
-Belt/Buckle- Tip extends through buckle to wearer's left (males) or right (females), with no blue fabric showing -Purses- Plain black leather or vinyl, without ornamentation; may have up to two shoulder straps with or without gold or silver buckles -Pens/Pencils: Concealed -Other- Have shoe laces in bar-bell style.
When should the Uniform NOT be worn:
-At a meeting of, or sponsored by, an organization, association, movement, or group that the Attorney General has named as totalitarian, fascist, communist, or subversive, advocates or approves acts of force or violence to deny others their rights, or seeks to change the United States government by unconstitutional means. -When participating in activities such as public speeches, interviews, picket lines, marches, or rallies, or in any public demonstration not approved by the Air Force. -When furthering political activities, private employment, or commercial interests. -When engaged in an off-duty civilian capacity. - When it would discredit the Armed Forces. -At any public meeting, demonstration, march, rally, or interview if the purpose may be to advocate, express, or approve opposition to the Armed Forces of the United States. -Airmen will not wear or mix distinctive uniform items with civilian clothes, for example, rank insignia, cap devices, badges, and other US or Air Force insignia, devices, buttons, etc
